Black History Walks delivers talks, all year long. See our next public event HEREWe have over 40 interactive, short to long, multi-media presentations which can be presented to assemblies, universities, community or staff groups. The presentations cover National Curriculum items like World War 1 and 2, Black British Civil Rights and Science and Invention. In addition we offer adult education on Fibroids, Black Women Leaders, The Black Image, Medical Apartheid, Reparations, Abolition and Gentrification to name but a few. We also have a large selection of popular culture items like; The Black History of Comedy, How Jamaicans ended Slavery, African Superheroes Day, How to Brainwash the Youth and make them act like Fools! 400 Years of African Women Resistance Leaders, X Men/Captain America/Call of Duty Movie Breakdowns.

Previous audiences include primary/secondary schools, Bank of England, Houses of Parliament, Cisco Systems, Hewlett Packard, UBS, Citigroup, Northern Trust, Morgan Stanley, Norton Rose Fulbright, PWC, HM Treasury, Department of Education and Skills, Royal Holloway University, Kent University, Care Quality Commission, The Red Cross, Westminster Council, Ofcom, Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, NHS, National Army Museum and Cottons Restaurant.

On a monthly basis we arrange and host the Queen Nzingha lectures presented by African Caribbean female academics/holders of expert knowledge speaking on their areas of expertise. Such talks include: The Impact of Hip Hop on White Masculinities, White Saviours and the Black Help(less), African Hair Police: Death and Discrimination on your head, How True African Dance was Corrupted into Porn and 26 other topics. The list below is not exhaustive, bespoke presentations can be arranged. Community Cohesion and PVE training also available.

The Purge: White Saviours and the Black Help(less)

Queen Nzinga was an African Queen who fought against the European invasion of southern Africa (Congo/Angola). The Queen Nzinga lecture series will feature African female academics / holders of expert knowledge, speaking on topics of their choice on a monthly basis. The Nzinga lecture series will provide a regular platform for women of African descent to highlight important issues in an academic setting. X Men: Black History Movie Breakdown

In this Xtra special movie breakdown we analyse 4 X Men movies from a Black History perspective. X Men, X Men 2, X Men 3:The Last Stand and X Men First Class . We will delve deep into the background of the X men comics and movies. We will cover:

Call of Duty: Black History Breakdown

Computer games are making more money than some movies nowadays (C.O.D sales have topped $10 Billion so far, the Avengers movie made $1.5 billion) Producers and actors are increasingly selling stories to millions of eager consumers using this format but what sort of stories are being told ? We already know that film is an extremely powerful medium which often contains blatant and hidden messages. So how do these cinematic, high defintion, interactive video games relate to Black people and their history ? Are they a help or a hindrance ?

Captain America, Winter Soldier: Movie Breakdown

Captain America 2 broke box office records and introduced us to a new Black superhero. However this movie owes a great deal to some shocking African-American history. Like blockbusters such as Captain Phillips, where factual history is turned on its head ( the reason Somalis began hijacking European/US ships was due to such ships dumping toxic and nuclear waste into Somali waters resulting in human birth defects) some facts are missing for the sake of entertainment. Fibroids: What Sisters need to know

aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the African and African Caribbean Community. The Lake Foundation is currently developing a fibroids awareness, information and support programme and as part of this work have conducted a survey toexplore the needs of women affected by fibroids, has formed a Fibroids Ask the Expert panel and has recently developed a fibroids booklet entitled Fibroids: what you need to know. Abi holds a BSc. in Medical Biochemistry, a MSc. in Clinical Biochemistry with Molecular Biology and a Masters in Public Health. She started her career in the pharmaceutical industry and has over 7 years experiences in the charitable sector.

The Black History of Comedy

Comedians often use history as part of their material. In this interactive session we piece together a visual tapestry of the best historical comedy from great known and unknown comics from the 1960’s to now We will also place their comical observations on a historical timeline of international struggle for African equality and show how comedy can be educational. Be prepared to laugh your head off and learn about world history at the same time.

How Jamaicans ended Slavery: Rebellion 1832

Sam ‘Daddy’ Sharpe is the man who inspired 60, 000 Africans to rise up against British slavemasters in Jamaica. At a time when Black people were killed just for learning to read,( forget phones and facebook) and not allowed to leave their plantation this achievement is incredible! How did he do it ? Who helped him. What was the effect ?

The rebellion started off in December 1831 as general strike but carried on into 1832 as an armed uprising. The very next year, the British rushed through legislation to end slavery. Was it for fear that..if freedom was not granted soon on British terms, then it would be taken on African terms as was done in Haiti…?

Recent media articles have complained of London being ‘sold off to foreigners’ It is certainly true that parts of London have drastically changed in appearance in recent years but what impact has there been on the African-Caribbean community ? Black History Walks have hosted a number of educational events on the Windrush generation, civil rights and housing in Brixton/Notting Hill, Peckham but some of our venues no longer exist due to gentrification.

Queen Nzingha Lecture 16. America’s Racial Past and Future in The Help and The Purge by Dr Althea Legal-Miller. The widespread appeal of Hollywood movies makes this particular medium a crucial site for examining the meanings of race in the United States. Popular films have the power to reconstruct the racial past of a nation, as well as envision its future. This presentation will provide readings on The Help (dir, Tate Taylor, 2011) and The Purge (dir, James DeMonaco, 2013) in order to examine both the racial and gender discourse that is embedded in these representations of two key social contexts – the 1960s civil rights era and the post-civil rights not-too-distant future. Queen Nzingha Lecture 28. Fibroids. Women of African descent suffer far more from fibroids than white women but mainstream agencies have failed to highlight information on this topic.

Fibroids are more common in Black women than white women with Black women being more likely to develop multiple, larger and more aggressive fibroids. With this in mind it is important that black women are empowered with accurate reliable information about fibroids including prevention and treatment options.
